West Hazel Dell — A fifth-grader at Eisenhower Elementary School will prove his knowledge of history at the National History Bee next month in Atlanta. Andrew Douglas will represent Oregon and Southwest Washington after winning a regional championship in March. In the competition, he’ll be expected to demonstrate a wide breadth of historical knowledge, from political to social, ancient to modern. His parents are both educators. His father, David Douglas, who teaches at Columbia River High School, said Andrew has developed a passion for history on his own, including volunteering for the last four years at the Fort Vancouver National Historic Site. If he wins the June 6 competition, Andrew will get a $1,000 scholarship.
