South Ridge students merge art, math skills in project

Ridgefield — Math and art skills might stem from different parts of the brain, but sixth-graders in Ridgefield were able to bridge those abilities during a recent project in their advanced math class. South Ridge math teacher Morning Stalcup and art teacher Heather Fukuchi teamed up to create a curriculum that combined a little bit math and a little bit art. Students used scale factor to draw an enlarged version of a small comic strip. It had to be drawn with accurate dimensions, which turned out to be trickier than some kids anticipated, Stalcup said in a press release. Scale factor calculation lessons typically begin in seventh grade in the district, but next year will be a part of regular sixth-grade studies.
