Esther Short — Two-legged walkers who were walking on behalf of four-legged walkers broke records during the Humane Society for Southwest Washington’s annual Walk/Run for the Animals on May 3 in Esther Short Park. There were 715 walkers and 105 runners — and 380 participating dogs — who did a 3-mile walk or a 5-kilometer run before returning to the park for dog- and cat-friendly festivities. The event raised a record $85,000 that will go toward medical services, adoption programs and other Humane Society support. The agency expects to care for nearly 8,000 animals this year.
