Weather Eye: Pleasant days will follow scattered showers, cool temperatures

Strike up another one for the Hazel Dell Parade of Bands. A beautiful day for the parade with dry pavement and temperatures in the comfortable range. There were a few sprinkles early in the morning, and I held my breath, but the rest of Saturday was another fantastic May day in the great Northwest.

Now, today is another story with scattered showers, cool temperatures and a rumble of thunder here and there. This will linger into Monday, then high pressure rebuilds for pleasant weather Tuesday through Thursday with highs in the 70s.

It will be cold enough aloft for snow in the higher ski areas today and Monday. Just when the snow begins to melt at the higher elevations, we get more snow. That’s OK; we will take all we can.

Thirty-four years ago it was a clear, sunny day and a calm morning when Mount St. Helens erupted. I was outside looking the garden over before church when I heard the distant boom and noticed the towering plume of smoke and debris reaching for the heavens. I was surprised, and then not so much, as the mountain had been rumbling and shaking for a couple of months. A day one will remember forever.

The coming holiday weekend appears to start off damp Friday and Saturday, then pleasant and dry. Stay tuned. The pattern this month has favored sunny, warm weekdays and cloudy, damp weekends. We’ll see if we can turn that around come June.

In May we are running 59.2 degrees for the average mean temperature, 2.6 degrees above normal. Rainfall was 1.42 inches, a tenth of an inch below average.

We’ll catch up after today and Monday’s tally.
