A Battle Ground man has been arrested for allegedly stealing more than 300 gallons of gasoline from an underground tank in Cougar.

Cowlitz County Sheriff’s deputies arrested Matthew Allen Scott, 31, on Wednesday on suspicion of second-degree theft as part of an investigation that began May 4.

The owner of the Cougar Store reported 342 gallons of gas — worth $1,135 — was taken from his underground storage tank after locks were cut. The Lakeside Store across the street also reported a missing lock on its tank but thought it had been human error, deputies wrote. That store was not able to tell if gas was missing.

Surveillance video from that store showed a man in a white truck near both tanks early in the morning of May 2, according court records.

After sharing the information with other agencies, a Clark County detective contacted Cowlitz County to say he’d arrested Scott for trafficking of stolen property and theft of gas.

Allen reportedly told that detective he’d stolen from the Cougar store; and his white truck held two 50-gallon gas drums and an electric pump, and reeked of gasoline, according to court records.

Scott has been released on $10,000 bail.
