They had a chance.
That’s all the Battle Ground Tigers needed Thursday against Skyview in a Class 4A district elimination game.
Trailing 1-0 with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, Madison Barr got a single — just the second hit of the game for the Tigers.
There’s that chance.
Brittany Langdon followed with a double.
There’s that opportunity.
Krystina Fischer then blasted a walk-off, two-run double, saving Battle Ground’s season with a 2-1 victory.
“I honestly can’t even explain it. I’ve never been in that position before. It’s probably the best feeling ever,” Fischer said.
Battle Ground qualified for the bi-district tournament and will try to earn a trip to state. Skyview’s season came to an end.
Up until the seventh, Skyview pitcher Michelle Brincefield had baffled Battle Ground’s batters. Fischer said no one got down.
“We really believed in each other the whole game,” Fischer said. “I felt everyone believing at that moment, and it just happened.”
Battle Ground sophomore pitcher Parker Boyd struck out nine, scattering eight hits, and did not give up an earned run.
Skyview took a 1-0 lead in the second, taking advantage of an error to extend the inning. Erica Cook had a run-scoring infield single.
Skyview had two base runners in the fifth and sixth innings but failed to score.
Brincefield, who was perfect through four innings, struck out five in the tough-luck loss. The team’s ace all four years of high school, she helped Skyview reach the state tournament two times.
