4A district track: Heritage runner wins four titles, Skyview takes team honors

Bed-ridden with a fever one week ago, Keaton Spiller probably would have been happy with one district track championship.

He got four.

The Heritage junior was the most-decorated Class 4A individual at the District Track and Field Championships.

Thursday at McKenzie Stadium, Spiller added victories in the 1600 and 1600 relay to the 400 and 800 titles he won Wednesday.

Spiller held off Union’s Jordan Moore to win the 1600 by less than half a second. Several minutes afterward, he was still breathing rapidly while sitting on the grass beside the track.

For Spiller, the race had begun long before the starting gun fired. It involved a week of healthful eating, hydration and sleep.

“I did everything I could to get better,” Spiller said. “The day before the district meet, I finally felt better.”

There were also dramatics in the girls team competition. Skyview won the team title on the final event when 1600 relay anchor Chisom Eke crossed the finish one second ahead of Camas star Alexa Efraimson, who nearly eclipsed a sizable Skyview lead.

Skyview finished with 147.8 points, while Camas had 145. Skyview’s boys also won the team title, 21 points ahead of Heritage.

Efraimson showed her dominating kick in winning the 1600. She stayed with the pack until 600 meters were left, then turned on the jets. With 400 meters left, she had a 35-meter lead and won in 4:54.72, the best time in Class 4A statewide this season.

“My coach and I wanted to work more on the later part of the race,” Efraimson said. “At state I’ll go all out or close to it, get those marks and then improve off of that.”

Efraimson won the 1600 state title last year in a record time of 4:39.25.

Bailey King was among other athletes winning multiple district titles. One day after winning the shot put, the Union sophomore won discus.

Devin Murphy of Heritage added a long jump title to the triple jump he won Wednesday.

Ryan Gunther of Camas added a 110 hurdles title a day after winning the 300 hurdles.

Aubrey Ward-El of Skyview won the shot put a day after claiming the javelin.

Camas hurdler Jordan Davis won the 110 hurdles, adding to her 300 hurdle win Wednesday.
