3A district track: Pair lead Prairie to boys crown, River wins girls

There’s no decathlon at the Greater St. Helens League district track championships, but Jason vs. James would certainly be a competition worth watching.

Jason Bracken and James Phillips are Prairie’s do-everything track stars. They combined for five first places, one second and one third to help the Falcons edge Kelso and Columbia River for the 3A boys team title Thursday at McKenzie Stadium.

Thursday, Bracken won the high jump (6-0) and discus (141-8) and finished third in the javelin. Phillips won the long jump and 110 hurdles a day after winning the 300 hurdles.

For Bracken, competing in throwing and jumping events isn’t too much of a stretch.

“With throwing, most of the workouts are legs,” Bracken said. “So the workouts transfer really well to high jump.”

Last season, Bracken mainly focused on throwing events. High jump happened on a whim.

“They left the high jump bar up at 6-2,” Bracken said. “I was warming up with my buddy and I said ‘I’m going to go do it.’ I made it over 6-2 in my sweats. I’ve been a high jumper ever since.”

Columbia River’s Marcus Gaylor completed his district double, winning the 200 meters a day after winning the 100. Jordan Hunter of Hudson’s Bay also claimed two titles, winning the shot put a day after winning the discus.

Columbia River won the girls team title with 171 points, 42 ahead of Kelso.
