Prep rugby season comes to end at Rugby Oregon championships

Matches slated for Saturday at Delta Park in Portland

Clark County teams can put their final stamp on the 2014 high school rugby season on Saturday when the Rugby Oregon championship matches are played at Delta Park in north Portland.

In the division for teams with players from one high school, Union will take on Prairie in the championship match at 12:30 p.m. on Field 4.

In the division for clubs that draw players from multiple schools, the Clark County Warriors Red will shoot for an unbeaten season when they take on Eastside of Gresham at 2:30 p.m., also on Delta Park’s Field 4.

The Clark County Warriors second team will play at noon on Field 2 against Pendleton in a consolation match.

Battle Ground will play for third place in the second-level tournament in the Varsity Premiership division, taking on Central Catholic at 3 p.m. on Field 2.

The Battle Ground girls team plays a consolation match at 9:30 a.m. on Field 4 against Columbia County.

Here are reports from the May 10 semifinal matches:

Union 45, Lakeridge 19 — Using its superior depth, Union pulled away in the second half to topple Lakeridgte.

Sophomore Brendon Curle, the team captain scored three tries and was selected Union’s man of the match. Other Union players to score were Michael Gladkov, Jake Burchett, Jake Kim and Isaac Aguilar.

Leading 21-7 at halftime, Union scored two tries early in the second half to solidify its lead.

A first-year team, Union has won eight of nine matches this season including a 25-7 win over Prairie on April 12.

Prairie 36, Reynolds 24 — Brendan Busey and Aaron Jacques scored late tries to rally Prairie over the defending state champions in a semifinal match. Reynolds led 24-22 until those tries carried the Wolf Pack to the victory.

Mitch Bessett, Jacob George and team captain Hayden Perrins also scored tries for Prairie. Jacob George kicked four conversions.

Prairie coach John Fletcher said that sophomore Eric Creamer was solid at fullback, that and Tyler Duncan and Adam Ayale were devastating with their tackling. Austin Conroy was nominated as Prairie man of the match.

Clark County Red 58, West Linn 5 — Julian Svaricek scored four tries and the Warriors continued their dominating season in the semifinals of the Club Championship Division. Also scoring tries for clark County were: Scoring tries were: Brock Busch (two), Michael DiGenova, Jessie Kiesser, Justin Straup and Matt Walser. Izzak Heredia made four conversion kicks.

Columbia County 43, Clark County Black 27 — In a consolation semifinal, the second Clark County team lost to a Scappoose, Ore. Scoring tries for the Black provided were Joey Brauer, Junior Gay, Taylor Kaufman, Ryan Gingrich and Alex Shi. Brendan Geigenmiller made one conversion kick.

Lincoln 28, Battle Ground 27 — The Bulls (4-3-2) came up one point short in a second-tier semifinal match. Lincoln scored a try in the final seconds and made the two-point conversion kick for the one-point win.

After tying for third place at the end of the regular season, Battle Ground was the No. 5 seed based on tiebreakers, putting it in the second-level for the state playoffs.

Girls rugby

Grant 35, Battle Ground 0 — The Battle Ground girls lost in the state semifinals to the top seed in tournament.
