Investigators say excessive speed led to the fatal crash that killed a Battle Ground man Saturday night.

Artem N. Matyunin, 21, was driving a 2000 Mitsubishi Eclipse north on South Grace Avenue when, at about 9:30 p.m., he crossed the centerline and sideswiped a 2006 Ford Mustang near Eaton Boulevard, according to Battle Ground police.

Matyunin then lost control of the vehicle, which left the roadway, struck several objects and flipped near the 2300 block of South Grace Avenue, according to police. Matyunin, who was not wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Mustang was not injured, police said.

Investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor, but those results were not available Monday.

Detectives with the Clark County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division are assisting with the crash investigation.
