Police talked a man into peacefully surrendering after a Friday afternoon domestic disturbance at a home in central Vancouver’s Marrion neighborhood.
A woman went to Marrion Elementary School around 2:30 p.m. to pick up her children and mentioned to a school official that her husband had pushed her and threatened to kill her earlier on Friday, according to Vancouver police Sgt. Michael Chylack. A school official called 911, and police were sent to the woman’s residence in the 1000 block of Northeast 108th Avenue, where her husband was. Meanwhile, Marrion Elementary was briefly put on lockdown, though no students were ever in danger, Chylack said.
Police brought an armored vehicle and surrounded the house, erring on the side of caution as the man had access to firearms in his house, Chylack said.
“He had a lot of guns, but they were never in play,” Chylack said.
A section of Northeast Ninth Street was blocked off while a negotiator attempted to call the man. It was difficult to get through to him, Chylack said, because his friends and counselor were calling him as well. Once police were able to talk with the man over the phone, he came out of the house and surrendered. He was booked into the Clark County Jail on suspicion of assault and criminal harassment.
