Bomb experts were sent to Hathaway Park in Washougal after someone reported finding a suspicious container.
The container turned out to be someone’s attempt to make a primitive explosive device, said Washougal police Sgt. Brad Chicks.
Washougal police went to the lower part of the park, just north of Hathaway Elementary School, after a fisherman found a suspicious-looking container made out of a spray can. The police called in the metro bomb squad to check it out.
“Anything that looks like a device, we don’t touch it,” Hicks said.
Technicians from Vancouver and Portland examined the device from a distance and then dissembled it after determining it couldn’t ignite. Although the bomb technicians deemed the primitive bomb benign, they lauded the Washougal Police Department for taking the precaution to call it in.
