Full-day kindergarten program to expand

WASHOUGAL — Starting in September, the Washougal School District will offer free full-day kindergarten at each of its three elementary schools.

The district is using funding from a voter-approved maintenance and operations levy to expand kindergarten at Gause and Cape Horn-Skye schools in the fall.

Hathaway Elementary already offered full-day kindergarten this year; state funding supported kindergarten programs in schools with high rates of students on free or reduced-price meal plans.

Kindergarten registration for the upcoming school year kicks off Monday at Washougal schools. Classes begin Sept. 2, but district officials encourage parents to register their children early to help administrators accurately plan staffing to keep student-to-teacher ratios in check.

Students must be at least 5 years old before Sept. 1 to register. Their parents need to provide an original birth certificate and the latest immunization records to registration. For more information, visit www.washougal.k12.wa.us/kindergarten.
