Arbor Day event April 9 in Esther Short Park

Vancouver will celebrate Arbor Day with a tree planting from noon to 1 p.m. April 9 in Esther Short Park in downtown Vancouver.

During the free event, the city will be recognized with a Tree City USA Growth Award, the 25th consecutive year the city has been honored as a Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation.

A ceremonial planting of the official Arbor Day tree, a Bosque Elm, will conclude the event, according to a city news release.

Attendees will receive a free tree seedling to plant at home.

Additional city Arbor Day events include a Vancouver Downtown Association planting from 10 a.m. to noon April 4. Participants should wear sturdy shoes and meet at Ninth and Main streets.

The city will also sponsor a planting from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 12 at Gretchen Fraser Park, Southeast 155th Avenue and Mill Plain Boulevard. Volunteers will plant 25 new trees. Tools, training and snacks will be provided. Volunteers should wear sturdy shoes and RSVP to 360-487-8308 or urbanforestry@cityofvancouver.us.
