Things went downhill fast for Luke Musgrave.
But that was a good thing for the Clark County ski racer.
Musgrave, 14, won the overall title at the Pacific Northwest Under-14 Buddy Werner Championship on March 14-15 at Crystal Mountain Resort.
Racing for Mount Hood Academy, Musgrave swept the three major races in the competition. He won the super-G on Friday, the slalom Saturday and the giant slalom Sunday.
Friday, his super-G winning time of 52.58 seconds was 0.20 seconds faster than second-place teammate Zachary Simmons.
Saturday, his second run in the slalom of 45.94 seconds was fastest on the course by 2.09 seconds.
Sunday, Musgrave’s first of two giant slalom runs was the fastest by 1.77 seconds.
Skier places at regionals
Skier Ashley Lodmell of Vancouver finished eighth and fourth in the two super-G events on Thursday and Friday at the United States Ski and Snowboard Association Western Region Under-16 Championships.
Lodmell was the top Pacific Northwest Ski Association finisher in both super-G races at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort in Teton Village, Wyo.
In Saturday’s giant slalom and Sunday’s slalom, Lodmell fell and did not finish.
Honors for Prairie equestrian team
Prairie High freshman Alivia Stone took first in three individual events and three team events during the final district meet of the season for the Prairie High School equestrian team, which took place Friday through Sunday in Spanaway. Junior Casey Kampe had two individual first-place finishes and two team firsts, and the 14-member Prairie drill team won the short program.
Over the three-meet season, Prairie riders earned 13 gold medals. Prairie was the overall high-point champion for its division.
Prairie qualified 16 riders in 16 events for the Washington High School Equestrian Teams state finals May 6-9 in Lynden.
Individual District 4 gold medal winners heading to state for Prairie are: Stone for showmanship and stock seat, Paige Rinta for trail, Devon Loboto and Kylie Vroman for over fences, Kiauna Johnson for poles, and Kampe in breakaway roping and steer daubing.
Team district gold medals for Prairie include Johnson, Rinta, Stone and Jacob Stone for in-hand obstacle relay, Rinta and Stone for working pairs, Emily Bozarth and Kampe for bi-rangle, and Taylor Adams and Stephanie Ivarsen for team penning.
For Vancouver United, Hannah McDonald won the first place at the meet in reining. For the three-meet season, McDonald also was a gold-medal winner in working rancher. She qualified for state in five events. Also qualifying for state from Vancouver United were Shelby Lee, Natasha Flannery and Hailey Anderson.
