The high school spring sports season started in earnest last week.
But this week, at least for some baseball teams, the games really begin to count.
Trico League baseball and soccer teams played league games last week. This week, the 4A and 3A Greater St. Helens League baseball teams will join them in opening league play.
Hopefully. But more on that later.
The 4A and 3A GSHLs again opted for 15-game league schedule, meaning Wednesday is opening day for league play.
In the 4A GSHL, Heritage faces Battle Ground, Camas plays Skyview and Evergreen meets Union. In the 3A GSHL, openers are Prairie vs. Columbia River, Fort Vancouver vs. Mountain View and Hudson’s Bay vs. Kelso.
Each 4A and 3A GSHL baseball team have two league games slated for this week.
The Trico League opened league play in baseball last week with Tuesday doubleheaders. More doubleheaders are set for this Tuesday.
The 2A GSHL will play three rounds of league play. But as there are five teams in the 2A GSHL — and the league is also using some doubleheaders — league play won’t commence until next week.
League play for 4A, 3A and 2A GSHL soccer begins next week, while softball league won’t start until mid-April.

Now, of course, baseball games are all dependent on the weather.
Last week’s weather was pretty good. This week’s weather may not be as good.
After a pleasant Monday, rain returns Tuesday with the forecast calling for showers or rain the rest of the week.

Hopefully, the weather will improve by Saturday. That’s when the annual Tiger Invitational will be held at Battle Ground High School. The meet serves as a good early season test for track and field athletes, and most Clark County schools will send athletes to the event at District Stadium.

We hope you have been enjoying our All-Region series, as we salute the outstanding athletes from the winter prep season.
To date, we’ve unveiled our athletes of the year and All-Region teams for boys wrestling (March 19), gymnastics (March 21) and girls basketball (March 22). The series continues today with girls bowling. Boys basketball is tentatively set for Wednesday with girls wrestling and boys swimming rounding out the series later this week.
Thanks to everyone who cast for votes for our All-Region boys and girls basketball teams. We had almost 1,500 votes cast for the girls basketball and more than 1,700 votes for boys basketball. And these votes did have an impact on which players were ultimately selected to the All-Region team.
Also, thanks to the coaches for their participation as well.
