BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF SOUTHWEST WASHINGTON — 2014 YOUTH OF THE YEAR

Julie Le has been named Youth of the Year by Boys & Girls Clubs of Southwest Washington. Le is a senior at Columbia River High School and has been a member of the Boys & Girls Club since second grade. She is active with the club’s Keystone program, has collected more than 2,000 pounds of food for the Homeless in Hunger game and has been involved in the Toast for Teens fundraiser events. She is representing Southwest Washington at the state competition today.

Other local teens nominated for their involvement in their clubs and communities were: Trenton Browning, Prairie High School; Caroline Covak, Fort Vancouver High School; Fabiola Flores, Hudson’s Bay High School; Stephanie Guzman, Hudson’s Bay High School; Maria Schaljo, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics; and Kayla Sousa, Vancouver School of Arts and Academics.

BOEING TECHPREP INTERNSHIP

Bobby Jacobs, a senior at Washougal High School, has been invited to continue in Boeing’s TechPrep program, a paid summer internship. Jacobs completed the first four-week program last summer, working with drills, mills and lathes, and learning how to read and create technical drawings. This summer, he will work as part of a team to produce a rocket boat, and then will be eligible to participate in a seven-week program where he will job-shadow professionals, gain interview skills, and create a resume.

2014 FOUR-BY-FOUR COMPETITION

Austin Chang, Jason Liu and Peter Lu, working as a team and representing Mountain View High School, recently placed 15th in the 2014 Four-by-Four Competition, a national mathematics contest administered by National Assessment & Testing. They were coached by Barbara Elliott.
