Esther Short — Telmate, a firm that creates communications technologies for use in jails, has named Clark County Jail Commander Michael Anderson its Hero of the Month.

Anderson uses tools like Telmate Investigator, a software package that combines inmate data and powerful surveillance capabilities — for example, not just listening to and recording inmate phone calls but even analyzing their “voice biometrics,” according to Telmate’s website. That allows law enforcement officials to “hear the unfiltered truth and get to the real issue,” Anderson said. “It is utilized daily by everyone to resolve complaints, verify information, resolve litigation, verify facts, prepare new criminal cases and clear the innocent. I can’t think of a major criminal case or civil litigation … where we have not used recording to verify facts.”

Anderson has trained hundreds of other law enforcement agency personnel to use Telmate, which is based in Ontario, Ore.
