The high school lacrosse season will begin this week with teams from Clark County playing non-league matches.
Four boys programs and one girls club will participate in high school lacrosse this spring.
Evergreen Lacrosse Club is the lone girls program in Southwest Washington. It draws players from the four Evergreen Public Schools high schools. ELC opens with a 2 p.m. match against Curtis of Tacoma on Saturday at McKenzie Stadium.
In boys lacrosse, Clark County will be home to several rivalries in 2014. Following several seasons as a top-tier club program, King’s Way Christian is returning to Division II of the Washington High School Boys Lacrosse Association. The Knights will play in the same division with Camas and Union. Other teams in the division are first-year team Southridge, which joins fellow Tri-Cities club Richland in the South-Central Division. Selah rounds out the division.
The season runs through mid-May, followed by state playoffs.
Camas opens with four matches between March 14 and March 21, including an 8 p.m. Friday match against Forest Grove, Ore., at Doc Harris Stadium and a 8 p.m. match March 19 at Doc Harris Stadium against Wilson of Portland.
King’s Way begins its season at home on March 19 against Tigard, Ore.
Union begins its season with road matches on March 19 against Century of Hillsboro, Ore., and on March 28 at Aloha, Ore.
Weightlifting event is Saturday in Portland
Local competitive weightlifters, including a team from the Washington State School for the Blind, will participate in a bench press and dead-lift competition on Saturday.
The World Association of Benchpressers and Dealifters North American Cham pionships will be held at the Shilo Inn at 11707 N.E. Airport Way in Portland.
Bench press competition runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with one-hour sessions for six different divisions. Dead-lifting competition begins at 4 p.m. and concludes with open men’s division lifts at 6:15 p.m.
Among those scheduled to compete is Nin Beseda of Battle Ground, who holds several WABDL Washington state bench press age-division records. He hopes to add to his records on Saturday.
Competing in teenage divisions for the Washington State School for the Blind Lions will be Juan Aguilar, Nathaniel Baker, Shane Compo, Cameron Davenport, Gage Stevens, Gabriel Markstrom, Ella Donaghey, Aaliyah Gray, Abby Griffith, Erica Humphreys, Karley Patching and Alexis Payne. The WSSB coaches are Judy Koch-Smith, Steve Lowry and JJ Isaacson.
LaCamas age-group swimmers win gold
The LaCamas Headhunters of Camas placed third in team scoring at the Oregon Swimming age 11-14 Championships.
Mark Kim, age 13, led the way with four gold medals and two silver medals during the meet, which took place Feb. 27 through March 3 in Corvallis, Ore. Kim won the 200-yard medley race, the 500-yard freestyle, the 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle for 13-year-old boys. Kim placed second in the age-13 1,000-yard freestyle and in the 400-yard medley for ages 11-13.
Sruthi Ravi, 12, won a gold medal in the girls 50-yard backstroke and bronze in the 100 backstroke.
The Headhunters team of Sruthi, Steph Hake, Abby Crowson and Bailey Segall won gold medals in the 200 and 400 medley relays for ages 11-12. The LaCamas 11-12 boys relay teams placed second in all four of their races, the 200 and 400 freestyle and medley relays. Swimmers were Eric Wu, Khlaifha Kalahiki, Val Tikomirov, Chris Xia and Jaden Kim.
Jaden Kim (11) and Eric Wu (12) each finished with three silver medals and a bronze. Nabil Kalahiki (11) earned bronze in the 100 backstroke, Khalifha Kalahiki (12) took a bronze in the 500 freestyle, Jeff Fadlovich (14) took bronze in the 1,000 freestyle and Val Tikhomirov (12) took bronze in the 50 breaststroke.
Also placing among the top eight in events were Hake (12), Crowson (12), Siobhan Choong (14), Mary Grall (12), Jack Harris (12), Mia Kamenko (11), Finn McClone (13), Segall (12), Xia, and Tenzin Zingka.
Fort Vancouver Run draws hundreds
About 600 runners and walkers braved cool, wet weather on March 2 to participate in the sixth Fort Vancouver Run.
Eric Curtis of Vancouver finished first among 244 who completed the 15-kilometer race. Curtis, 32, won by more than five minutes with a time of 54 minutes and 52 seconds.
Nicole Lee of Vancouver was the first of 144 women to finish the 15-kilometer race. Lee, 32, finished in 1 hour, 8 minutes and 30 seconds and was 50 seconds ahead of Leann Gilmore, 45, of Vancouver.
Staged by Energy Events, which puts on the Vancouver USA Marathon in June, the Fort Vancouver Run started and ended at the Fred Meyer Grand Central Shopping Center.
In the 10-kilometer run, Jeffery Leibert of Vancouver won by nearly two minutes with his time of 39:08. Leibert, 37, was the first of four Vancouver men who led the field of 153 10-K runners.
Kerry Furimsky, 38, of Vancouver was the women’s 10-K winner. She won by nearly seven minutes.
Eric Dolezal, 31, of Vancouver won the 6-kilometer race for the fifth year in a row. His time of 19:40 was 3:02 ahead of runner up Katrina Mueller of Vancouver. Mueller was the women’s champion with a time of 22:42. A total of 197 completed the 6-K race.
Soccer team places 2nd in state tourney
The Washington Timbers G95 Burgundy placed second in the girls under 19 Washington Youth Soccer Founders Cup, losing Sunday’s championship match on penalty kicks.
A team from Seattle United Shoreline beat the Timbers Burgundy team 4-3 in the tie-breaker after the teams battled to a scoreless draw at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.
The Founders Cup is the Washington Youth Soccer state tournament for developmental-level teams. This match was rescheduled from Feb. 9 because of a snow storm.
Players for the Washington Timbers G95 Burgundy were Lexi Veatch, Gabrielle Roberts, Cheyenne Anderson, Victoria Warner, Megan Kimitsuka, Samantha Lien, Molly Bolke, Kaitlyn Kirkpatrick, Ashley Weber, Neesha Godbole, Kaysee Schermerhorn, Maryellen Hammrich, Emily Rupp, Celeste Linn, Flavia Craft, Isabella Holt and Katherine Janney.
Obstacle course race set for March 22
Registration is open for the March Muddy Madness obstacle course footrace.
The event, staged by Northwest Personal Training, takes place at 10 a.m. on March 22 at the Woodland MX Park. Cost to race the adult course is $40. Cost for the kids course is $15.
Adults will race for one hour to see how many times they can complete the course, which is approximately 1 mile. The kids race begins at 11 a.m. and is one lap of the course.
