The FC Salmon Creek Boca Juniors 95 boys soccer team completed its season on Feb. 23 by winning a Washington Cup championship. The team of players born in 1995 won the silver division of the Puget Sound Premier League’s season-ending tournament at Issaquah Highlands Central Park.
On Feb. 22 Boca Juniors defeated Rainier SE RSA Elite 3-0 in a semifinal match of the boys under-19 tournament. The goals were scored by Brandon Zilles, Garrett Bredy and Eric Ferris. Goalkeeper Trevor Ervin earned the shutout.
On Feb. 23, FC Salmon Creek scored twice in the final 10 minutes to beat Northwest United 2-1 and win the tournament. Zilles scored both goals in the final match.
Boca Juniors 95 were coached by Mike McCarthy and Cory Ellis. The other players were Aaron Bode, Adam Jesche, Andrew Morgan, Brad Abella, Brock Howard, Bryan McCarthy, Daniel Poyfair, Eric Ferris, Jackson Himrich, Lance Phillips, Liam Cosme, Luis Garcia, Nic Peery and Tyler Ashmore.
This team formed in 2010, and won a Washington Youth Soccer Challenge Cup state title in its first season.
More recently, FCSC Boca Juniors participated in the Puget Sound Premier League, which is separate from Washington Youth Soccer. This tournament was the last one for the team of players who will be in college next season.
Men’s soccer club starts tryouts Saturday
The Vancouver Victory FC will hold open tryouts at 9 a.m. on Saturday at King’s Way Christian High School, 3300 N.E. 78th St.
The Victory are part of the Evergreen Premier League, a new men’s soccer league for current and former college players. The season runs April through July.
The Victory are coached by Clark College men’s soccer coach Biniam Afenegus. Players on the Victory will maintain amateur status, club owner Barrett Goddard said.

Special Olympics hoops event a success
Three Special Olympics basketball teams from Clark County earned first-place ribbons during the Clark County Invitational tournament, which was played on Feb. 22 at Hockinson High School.
The event involved 16 teams, including teams from Kelso and from Hillsboro, Ore. Staging it was the senior project of Hockinson High School seniors Nick Barclay and Taylor Guzman.
Members of the Hockinson High girls basketball team refereed games, and Hockinson High cheerleaders cheered.
Teams from Clark County that earned first place in their division were the Blue Sonics, the Eagles and the Penguins.

Hockinson equestrians earn victories
The Hockinson High School equestrian team had wins in four events at its second meet of the season, which took place Feb. 14-16 in Elma.
Jennifer Wirth won the trail equitation, Shaylee Coleman won the working rancher, and Bella Campzano won hunt seat over fences. A Hockinson team of Cheyenne Coleman, Shaylee Coleman, Demi Ellithorpe, and Wirth finished first in the in-hand obstacle relay.

WWU hockey team includes local player
Logan Anderson of Vancouver has contributed nine goals and six assists as a freshman on the Western Washington University hockey team that has qualified for the Collegiate Ice Hockey Association national tournament.
The Vikings are defending national champions for the CIHA, which is an association of non-varsity club hockey teams. Their 17-0 record includes a narrow 1-0 win over Idaho and a 6-0 win over Portland State in their regional tournament.
The national tournament will take place March 13-15 in Newark, Ohio.
Mountain biking team forms for teen riders
The Columbia River Cycling Team, a new mountain bike racing team for high school students, is seeking, riders and coaches for the season that begins in March.
The team is for riders of all ability levels. The team will participate in Washington Student League mountain bike races, as well as Oregon Bicycle Racing Association events and other regional competition.

Saturday softball clinic at Battle Ground H.S.
A softball clinic for girls in grades 3-8 will be held on Saturday at the Battle Ground High School gym. Sessions are scheduled for 1-3 p.m. and 3:30-5:30 p.m. Cost is $20 per session. Battle Ground High School softball coaches and players will teach the clinic, which is a fundraiser for their program.
