A pedestrian was killed in a crash involving a tractor-trailer on Interstate 5 north of Woodland early Monday morning.

The crash was reported at 2:09 a.m. when the driver of the rig called and reported that he hit someone, according to Washington State Patrol Trooper Will Finn.

Phillip Reich, 47, of Covington was driving the tractor-trailer in the right lane when he saw the reflections of taillights of a blue Toyota Prius on the right shoulder, Finn said. He moved the rig into the center lane and struck something, he told investigators.

The driver of the Prius, Zeus Perez, 41, of Portland, was apparently in the center lane of the highway wearing dark clothing, Finn said. Perez was pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers don’t know why Perez was in the roadway and there were no other passengers or witnesses present, Finn said.

Northbound traffic on the highway was blocked for about five hours.
