Deputies now know what broke the window of a remote Washougal home Friday evening. They say a neighbor firing his 12-gauge shotgun damaged the home on Southeast 70th Street, in a densely wooded part of the Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area.

The residents called 911 to report the gunfire and shattered window at about 5:40 p.m. Friday.

After digging a projectile out of the house’s front door and another from the roof, investigators identified them as 12-gauge buckshot pellets, Clark County sheriff’s Sgt. Chad Rothenberger said.

“We recontacted a neighbor who initially denied knowing anything about it. We found a spent shotgun casing and he admitted shooting a 12-gauge three or four times at what he said was a raccoon,” Rothenberger said.

The case has been forwarded to the county prosecuting attorney, Rothenberger said, and 69-year-old Glen Johnson faces a charge of reckless endangerment.

They were sizable pellets — “almost the same diameter as a 9 mm bullet,” Rothenberger said — and went about 60 yards before hitting the house.

No one was injured.
