CLARK COUNTY YOUTH COMMISSION — YOUTH ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

Washougal School District has announced the names of its Youth Achievement Award winners, honored for demonstrating personal growth and for their contributions to the community. Youth receiving awards from throughout Clark County were honored on June 15 at Skyview High School. The Washougal-area students honored were:

Canyon Creek Middle School

Shelby Brock, inspiration; Bridgette McCarthy, tolerance; Rebekah Muir, art; Dylan Patten, personal achievement; Jalen Watts, leadership.

Cape-Horn Skye Elementary School

Katharine Byrd, inspiration; Lily Chamberlain, citizenship; Emily Crabtree, education.

Excelsior High School

Roselynn Crawford, career development; Rachel Graham, career development; Kayla Head, arts; Anastacia Owens, family life; Randee Schneider; personal achievement; Casey Volgmann, courage.

Jemtegaard Middle School

Michael Stevens, leadership.

Washougal High School

FUTURE BUSINESS LEADERS OF AMERICA STATE FINALISTS

Washougal High School’s Sayre Glaser and Matthew Hickey, recent freshmen, won third-place awards at the FBLA state competition and plan to compete at the national leadership conference, June 29 to July 2 in Nashville, Tenn. Glaser took third place at the state competition in FBLA Principles and Procedures. Hickey won third place at state in Introduction to Information Technology.

NATIONAL HISTORY DAY AWARDS

Students from Battle Ground’s Pleasant Valley Middle School won top awards at the National History Day Competition last week in Washington, D.C., bringing home a first-place finish and Naval History Award with their documentary, “Vietnam War Prisoners of War: Taking Responsibility When Deprived of All Rights.” Students Jethro Abatayo and Logan Gilbert traveled across the country to interview POWs and share their stories through the documentary. With them at the competition were students Ally Orr and Simon Benko. Orr’s exhibit on Hanford’s nuclear waste received the Outstanding Jr. Washington Project Award. Benko won an award for his performance on Native Americans’ fishing rights.
