Parishioners of the Proto-Cathedral of St. James the Greater will hold a downtown procession Sunday in honor of the Feast of Corpus Christi.

The route of the procession will begin at the steps of the proto-cathedral, 218 W. 12th St., at about 12:15 p.m. and proceed across the street to the first altar for benediction — a blessing of the people. The group will then proceed down 11th Street to Main Street, and then turn right on Evergreen Boulevard.

Going up Columbia Street, the procession will make another stop at Hamilton-Mylan Funeral Home for a second benediction before returning to the proto-cathedral for the final benediction. A barbecue at St. James will follow the procession.

Processions on Corpus Christi (Body of Christ) date back to the early 13th century in Italy, said Scott Powell, pastoral assistant.
