HSPEs are required comprehensive exams that measure high school students’ basic proficiency in reading and writing, and serve as the state’s exit exams in those subjects.

Registration for summer retake

• Deadline: June 26.

Although the school year is winding down, high school students and their parents should be aware of a June 26 registration deadline for a required state test. Missing the deadline — and failing to pass the test — can prevent a student from walking at graduation with their senior class.

Tenth-, 11th-, and 12th-grade students who have not passed the reading and/or writing sections of the High School Proficiency Exam must register by June 26 through the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction.

There is no testing fee.

All students in Washington take the HSPE on the same dates. Students will retake the writing test at 8 a.m. Aug. 12-13 and the reading test at 8 a.m. Aug. 14.

Students first take the HSPE in the spring of their sophomore year on the same dates throughout the state. A student who is absent on that date and doesn’t take the test must register for the test retake in August.

Students can retake the test until they pass, said Heather Fowler of Evergreen Public Schools.

Seniors who have failed the HSPE at least twice can submit a Collection of Evidence, a portfolio of work showing that they meet proficiency standards in the subject matter.

But seniors who neither pass the HSPE nor do a Collection of Evidence can’t walk at graduation, Fowler said.

“Some students don’t test well. Some students miss the testing dates,” Fowler said.

That’s why the state offers the summer HSPE retakes, she said.
