Harry S. Truman Elementary in Vancouver Public Schools is a recipient of the 2014 Safe Schools Award presented by the Washington State Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. The award recognizes educators who contribute to providing a safe school where students learn in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.

For the past five years, Truman staff members have worked to improve the instructional experience for their students on three fronts. An emphasis on teaching students behavior expectations, acknowledging students for demonstrating positive social behavior and building a sense of community in each classroom appears to be yielding favorable results.

Daily referrals of students to the office for discipline problems are at their lowest in five years, with a 50 percent reduction from last year.

The school’s address is 4505 N.E. 42nd Ave.
