Try This: Lots of fun on the run

Runners start the 2013 Vancouver USA Marathon.

Cheer on more than 3,000 runners as they take part in the Vancouver USA Marathon races. The full and half marathons are Sunday, with runners having seven hours to complete the course beginning and ending at Esther Short Park. The marathon will travel to Vancouver Lake, before heading back through the Fort Vancouver National Historical Site to Wintler Park on the Columbia River. The full weekend of activities includes the Active Expo and Summer Brewfest at Esther Short Park. The second annual beer festival will feature 25 local and regional breweries offering 50 different summer-inspired brews to those 21 and older.

When: 9 a.m. to 10 today and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday; Brewfest hours: noon to 10 today, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

Where: Esther Short Park, Eighth and Columbia streets, Vancouver.

Admission: Free; brewfest: $25 to $35 for ages 21 and older, includes mug and drink tokens.

2) Celebration of kids by kids

The 12th annual CamTown Youth Festival is chock-full of activities, including games, arts and crafts exhibits, entertainment and a petting zoo. Children can sell or trade homemade items or old toys at the kids flea market.

3) Train ride with dad

For Father’s Day weekend, Chelatchie Prairie Railroad will bring out its restored steam engine. Take a 12-mile round-trip ride through north Clark County, as the train travels through a 330-foot-long tunnel and stops at Moulton Station to visit Yacolt Falls. Reservations are recommended.

When: Noon and 2:30 p.m. today and Sunday.

Admission: $20, $19 for seniors, $15 for ages 5 to 12, $13 for ages 2 to 4.

4) Discover your local wilderness

Local organizations will offer an array of activities to celebrate National Get Outdoors Day. Children can try out archery, fishing, rock climbing or disc golf, along with learning more about planning an outdoor adventure to local parks, wildlife areas and public lands. Smokey Bear, Ranger Rick and Woodsy Owl will greet visitors. Visitors can also explore the historic Brigade Encampment, where costume interpreters re-enact the annual return of fur traders to Fort Vancouver. Visitors can learn about 1840s outdoor survival skills, historic children’s games, axe throwing and see a historic weapons demonstration.

5) ‘Dragon 2’ soars

Five years after Hiccup (voiced by Jay Baruchel) and Toothless united the Vikings and dragons of Berk, the pair have set their sights on exploring the unknown space on the map. They discover a secret ice cave home to hundreds of wild dragons and a mysterious Dragon Rider. But a villainous conqueror called Drago is forcefully building a dragon army and has set his eyes on the wild dragons. “How to Train Your Dragon 2” is rated PG.
