Fire investigators are continuing their inquiry into what caused a fire at a Cascade Highlands apartment early Thursday morning.

Vancouver Fire Marshal Heidi Scarpelli said that the fire is not suspicious, but that it may take a while for investigators to winnow through the possible types of accidental fire causes, collecting and analyzing forensic evidence.

The body of a man was recovered from a third-floor apartment, which firefighters could not reach when they first arrived at the fire, reported about 12:30 a.m. The intense heat from the flames had destroyed the stairwell, limiting rescuers’ access.

Crews finally recovered the adult man’s body about nine hours later.
