BATTLE GROUND — Battle Ground Public Schools has created two new positions — directors of instructional leadership in the teaching and learning department to help the district prepare all students to be college and career ready. Current school principals Laurie Sundby and Shelly Whitten have been appointed to the positions pending board approval. They will start July 1. The salary range for directors is $95,156 to $105,998.
The two new positions are made possible by eliminating the deputy superintendent position and restructuring the communications budget. This reallocation of funding will allow the district to expand services with minimal impact on the current budget.
The new directors will work one-on-one with principals to help them interpret student data to ensure the best supports are being implemented for each student. They also will develop professional learning networks focused on growth of instructional leaders and meeting the needs of staff and students.
Rather than hiring a new deputy superintendent, incoming Superintendent Mark Hottowe recommended the positions because he believes this is where resources can best impact student learning.
“These new directors will be in the school buildings working directly with principals to provide the needed support and resources for successful classroom instruction,” Hottowe said.
