Registration open now for Merwin Special Kids Day

ARIEL — Registration is open through June 30 for the 16th annual Merwin Special Kids Day fishing event at Merwin Hatchery along the North Fork of the Lewis River.

The event will provide children with disabilities a chance to catch big trout between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. July 12 at the hatchery.

The number to call to register is 1-800-899-4421.

The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife will plan the wheelchair-accessible hatchery waters with about 3,000 trout ranging from 1 to 4 pounds. Volunteers will serve as one-on-one fishing coaches to assist the youth.

Rods, reels, tackle and T-shirts will be provided for the young anglers to use and keep. A free barbecue lunch will be served followed by fish painting, a casting contest and other activities.

The event draws youth from the Vancouver School for the Blind, Doernbecher Children’s Hospital, Emanuel Legacy, Kaiser Kids and Shriners hospitals, but anyone with a special-needs child is welcome.
