Battle Ground — Inspired by a Portland art show, four Battle Ground High School students worked with their art instructor to create a five-foot clay totem called “Tiger Tracks in Time,” relating the history, spirit and impact of their school on the community.

The four students, Kateyln Lindstrom, Sarah Wick, Savanna Watson and Tori Homola, spent hundreds of hours outside of school to plan and create the unique artwork. Their instructor is Valinda Krieger.

The whimsical totem features a mascot tiger perched on historic local bricks; balanced and stacked on the tiger’s nose is an apple (representing learning), a peanut butter sandwich (representing fun at school), a “Book of Life” relating the evolution of a caterpillar into a butterfly, a No. 2 pencil and a graduation cap.

The totem is now on permanent display in the school’s Bob Peck Art Gallery. On May 12 the school district’s board of directors held a reception for all student artists in the gallery.
