Sturgeon retention to close in John Day pool

The Columbian
Published: June 2, 2014, 5:00pm

Sturgeon retention in the John Day pool of the Columbia River will be closed beginning June 14.

Washington and Oregon biologists predict the catch guideline of 500 sturgeon will be reached by that time. A year ago, the John Day pool closed on June 29.

Catch-and-release angling will be allowed.

Bonneville pool is closed currently, but will reopen on June 13-14 and June 20-21. Anglers kept 241 sturgeon from Bonneville pool in the winter portion of the season, which closed on March 9. That leaves 859 sturgeon to catch on the annual guideline of 1,100.

Sturgeon retention is closed in the lower Columbia for 2014. Anglers have caught just 71 sturgeon from the guideline of 300 for The Dalles pool.
