EUGENE, Ore. — A University of Oregon spokeswoman says four members of the Ethiopian track team have been missing since Saturday from the World Junior Championships.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports the four athletes are three women and a 17-year-old boy.

University spokeswoman Julie Brown says it’s possible the athletes are staying with friends and family elsewhere in the state, but the university has not been able to confirm that.

Brown says that despite speculation, it also has not been confirmed if the athletes are seeking asylum.

Brown says the UO Police Department is leading a missing persons investigation with assistance from Eugene police, Portland police and the FBI.

The 30-member Ethiopian team consists of 17 females and 13 males, according to the International Association of Athletics Federations website.
