Donations fund emergency surgery for retired K-9

Thanks to donations that flooded in over the past week, the family caring for retired Clark County sheriff’s K-9 Dash has completely paid for the dog’s emergency surgery.

On July 7, Deputy Seth Brannan rushed Dash, his former partner, to Columbia River Veterinary Hospital where he learn the dog was suffering from “gastric torsion,” a life-threatening condition more commonly known as stomach flip. In an emergency surgery to save his life, Dash lost his spleen and 20 percent of his stomach. He is expected to make a full recovery.

Dash, 7, retired from the sheriff’s office at the end of 2013. Once police dogs retire from service, their handler assumes all financial responsibility for the remainder of the dog’s life.

As of Thursday, the organization reached the goal of $5,732 to pay for Dash’s medical expenses.

Natalie Middleton, a spokeswoman for Dogpaw, said that she wanted to tell the community “Thank you for being so quick and so generous to respond. It’s pretty amazing.”

Dash is expected to make an appearance to say thank you at Dogpaw’s Bark in the Park event on Aug. 2 at Northeast Ross and 15th Avenue.
