A $500 reward was offered Monday by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service for information in a case involving a mailbox that was damaged by improvised explosive device.

The cluster-style mailbox serves several homes in the vicinity of Northeast 94th Street and Northeast 29th Court in Hazel Dell. It was damaged by the IED sometime around 2 a.m. Saturday, said Postal Inspector Scott Helton.

Helton said there is a “very, very strong” likelihood that the IED was a powerful firework.

It is a federal crime to damage postal service property, including cluster mailboxes. To report a tip, call 503-276-2080.
