A small fire that started Wednesday on an uninhabited island in the Columbia River was fully contained Thursday morning, according to the state Department of Natural Resources.

Three engines responded to the fire on Cottonwood Island, located between Kalama and Longview on the river. Crews worked to contain the fire until dark Wednesday, then returned early Thursday and had the 1-acre fire 100 percent contained later in the morning, said DNR spokesman Bob Redling.

The fire did not threaten any structures or people. No one lives on the 700-acre Cottonwood Island, which is protected by DNR.

DNR will investigate the fire, but the agency suspects it was human-caused, Redling said. Crews remained on the island Thursday for mop-up work, he said.
