Weather Eye: Week of Independence Day will remind us of last year’s weather

Happy July! It is going to be a hot one today, with highs reaching into 90s for the warmest day of the year. No worry, however — it will be short-lived as ocean air will make its way inland tomorrow and the rest of the week. So a cooling trend is on its way.

Pleasant weather is forecast through the long Fourth of July weekend. Maybe morning clouds, with highs 75 to 80 degrees, Thursday through Monday. No rain in sight, except maybe some drizzle right on the coastline. The recreational forecast has green lights everywhere.

Last July had a similar start — the high temperatures for the first seven days were 91, 86, 84, 75, 75, 79 and 79 degrees. That 91 degrees from last July 1 matches our high so far this year, and we will most likely surpass that today.

I will say one thing: It was a bit on the chilly side early Monday, with temperatures in the outlying areas into the 40s. We should remain in the 55-60 degree range most of the week for lows.

If I had to guess the weather for the fireworks on the Fourth, I would say, “pretty typical.” That translates into: Take a sweater or light jacket if you wish to be comfortable. I expect clear skies and northwest breezes, with temperatures in the low 60s as the 10 p.m. show begins.

Even if the weather is tolerable without an outer covering, it will help to protect against those nasty mosquitoes.

Rainfall reports are coming in for last month, with some impressive amounts.
