“Why Can’t We Get Along? Civility, Political Polarization, and American Democracy” will be presented by Cornell W. Clayton at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Washington State University Vancouver in the Dengerink Administration Building, Room 110, 14204 N.E. Salmon Creek Ave. The first 50 guests to this free, public event will receive a free copy of the book Clayton co-edited with Richard Elgar, assistant director of the Foley Institute.
Clayton is the Claudius O. Johnson Distinguished Professor of Political Science at WSU’s Pullman campus and the director of the Thomas S. Foley Institute for Public Policy and Public Service.
Although Clayton is in favor of a more civil and productive political discourse, his own research has convinced him not only that today’s political acrimony is not that exceptional historically, but that the relationship between civility and democracy is more nuanced and complicated than most realize.
Parking is available at meters and in the Blue Daily Pay Lot for $1.50 after 5 p.m. Parking is free after 7 p.m.
