DENVER (AP) — It can be surprisingly easy to get pot through airport security in the two states that have legalized marijuana. That’s because the Transportation Security Administration refers all minor drugs it discovers to local law enforcement. In Colorado and Washington, police cannot arrest people who possess an ounce or less of marijuana.
Airports in Colorado are scrambling to convince people not to fly with the drug. The two largest ones are relying on a provision of the state’s new marijuana law to ban pot on their premises.
In Washington state, airports can’t even do that. All they can do is remind people that federal authorities are free to arrest people on airplanes with the drug and that most flights land in places where marijuana is not legal.
