SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle’s interim police chief has reinstated an assistant police chief who was demoted last November.
Chief Harry Bailey on Wednesday named Nick Metz to head the department’s field support bureau. Metz was bumped down to captain by former police chief Jim Pugel, who was replaced this month.
Bailey also announced he is restructuring the current professional standards bureau to include a newly-created unit to investigate police uses of force.
Seattle U.S. Attorney Jenny Durkan says she believes Bailey and Seattle Mayor Ed Murray are committed to making changes to the department.
Seattle police have been developing new policies to eliminate concerns over biased policing under a settlement between Seattle police and the Justice Department, which found in 2011 that officers were too quick to use force.
