PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — French defender Mikael Silvestre and Major League Soccer’s Portland Timbers have agreed to terminate his contract following an injury shortened season.

Silvestre signed with the Timbers last February and made eight league appearances before tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee on May 2 during a game against New England.

The agreement to end the deal for the 36-year-old player was announced Monday.

Silvestre says he and his family enjoyed their time in Oregon and plan to stay there for the “foreseeable future.”

Silvestre played for Rennes (1997-98), Inter Milan (1998-99), Manchester United (1999-08), Arsenal (2008-10) and Werder Bremen (2010-12). He made 40 appearances for France’s national team from 2001-06.
