In a game that was in doubt until the final seconds, the Hilanders won by scoring the final five points. The result puts Kelso (7-9, 4-3) third and Fort Vancouver (7-10, 3-4) fourth in the Class 3A Greater St. Helens League.

A Tre Eisenhut 3-pointer put Fort Vancouver ahead 56-55. Kelso scored a go-ahead basket with 18 seconds left.

On the next possession, the Trappers traveled as on what would have been a go-ahead layup.

The Hilanders made two free throws to go up three points, then fouled before Fort could attempt a tying 3-point shot. After hitting a free throw, Fort intentionally missed the second foul shot with four seconds left. In a scramble on the floor for the loose ball, the Trappers gained control but called a timeout when they didn’t have any left. The Highlanders made one more free throw to seal the win.

Fort coach Scott Thompson said time would have expired anyway, so the timeout call did not cost his team a chance at a winning basket.

“It was a great final minute,” Thompson said.

Fort Vancouver has dropped three games in a row after starting league play 3-1.

“We got the wind taken out of us and we are trying to bounce back and can’t catch a break,” Thompson said. “We’ve got to fight our way out of it.”

The Trappers host Prairie on Thursday, their last home game of the season.

Eisenhut finished with 24 points, making 4 of 9 3-pointers, three steals and three assists. Jordan Suell had 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists, and Will Doty had 10 rebounds for Fort.

Blake Hampton and Nate Solomon scored 19 points apiece for Kelso.
