GRANTS PASS, Ore. — A miner who fell to his death from a Southern Oregon cliff has been identified as a Vancouver man.

A Josephine County, Ore. sheriff’s deputy told the Grants Pass Daily Courier that 59-year-old Charles Hindenburg and a friend had been working a gold claim on Silver Creek, about 25 miles northwest of Grants Pass. The men were hauling equipment up a cliff Friday afternoon when a dredge became stuck on a ledge.

Hindenburg fell 250 feet and was dead when rescuers reached the remote area more than five hours after the fall.
