Portland International Airport served 15 million travelers in 2013, the airport said in a news release Tuesday, surpassing the former record of 14.7 million passengers in 2007.

Improvements in the economy, an unprecedented increase in December travel and expanded route choices for passengers all contributed to last year’s passenger record. Meanwhile, PDX air freight remained steady at 212,414 tons for 2013, up .03 percent from 2012.

With more new routes on the way this year, continued growth at PDX is expected. Beginning June 8, Southwest Airlines launches new nonstop service connecting PDX with San Diego, Baltimore and Houston. Alaska starts flights to Salt Lake City on June 9, and Delta begins flights to Seattle on Sept. 2.
