BOSTON (AP) — The Red Sox have signed outfielder Grady Sizemore to a one-year contract.

A three-time All-Star, Sizemore, 31, has played eight major league seasons, all with the Indians. He hit .269 in Cleveland, with 139 home runs and 458 RBIs.

To make room on the 40-man roster, Boston right-handed pitcher Brayan Villarreal was designated for assignment. The moves were announced by general manager Ben Cherington on Wednesday.

Sizemore was named an American League All-Star in each of his last three full seasons (2006-08). During that stretch, he hit .279.

The veteran has been hampered by injuries over the last five years, though, missing the past two seasons recovering from right knee and back surgeries. Before 2009, he had never been placed on the disabled list.
