A team from Showtime Baseball of Vancouver went 4-3 during a weekend trip to Arizona.
Showtime went 2-3 at the 18-and-under Perfect Game MLK Invitational in Phoenix. The team of current high school players also swept a doubleheader against Notre Dame High School, the defending Arizona state champions.
According to Billy Hayes, founder of Showtime, the tournament was witnessed by major league baseball scouts and included elite teams from around the country.
On Friday, Showtime played three games. It lost 2-1 to the Arizona Pilots in the tournament, then swept a doubleheader from Notre Dame.
On Saturday, Showtime won 13-0 over CBA Easton from Colorado Springs. On Sunday, Showtime lost 3-2 to a team from Garciapara Baseball Group of Los Angeles. On Monday, Showtime beat the PBC Vipers from Auburn, Wash., 6-0.
The 18-player roster included four players from the Seattle area and 14 from Clark County. The local players were Tyler Armstrong of Prairie High School, James Brooks of Skyview, Alec Cheney of Skyview, Blake Christopher of Camas, Dakody Clemmer of Mountain View, Brooks Hanson of Skyview, Justin Hughes of Prairie, McKinley Lefore of Camas, Mitch Lines of Hockinson, Matthew Olstead of Union, Parker Randle of Battle Ground, Colin Rubino of Battle Ground, Gunner Talkington of Battle Ground and Trevor Wharton of Heritage.
Boys volleyball clinic, tourney on Saturday
Mik Berzins, a former college all-American, will coach a boys volleyball clinic from 9 to 10 a.m. on Sunday at Evergreen High School. The clinic will be followed by a Columbia Empire Volleyball Association boys tournament.
Berzins played at Ohio State from 2009-2012, helping the Buckeyes reach the NCAA semifinals three times and win one national title. A Maryland native, Berzins is Ohio State’s all-time leader with 902 digs. He is a graduate assistant coach at Oregon State.
Teams from Olympia to Salem are registered for the day-long tournament.

Benefit for blind athletes on Feb. 1
The Northwest Association for Blind Athletes is hosting a benefit dinner and auction on Feb. 1 at the Hilton Vancouver.
The event is an annual fundraiser for the association that provides sports activities for blind and visually impaired people of all ages. The Vancouver-based NABA has served more than 1,500 individuals since it was founded in 2007.

Area players shine in high school hockey
Team Gaustad from the Winterhawks Varsity Hockey League — a team that includes players from Southwest Washington — took second place at the Collier Cup Challenge.
The outdoor tournament for high school hockey teams was held over the weekend in Klamath Falls, Ore. Teams from Santa Rosa, Calif., Eugene and Klamath Falls joined Team Gaustad and Team Neely from the WHVL. Team Neely won the tournament.
Four Southwest Washington players were recognized for outstanding play at the tournament. Ashley Pham and Justin Bernstein each were named MVPs of one game, and Austin Martin of Hockinson was named the tournament defensive MVP.
VGSA schedules softball registration
The Vancouver Girls Softball Association will hold in-person registration for its 2014 season on three days in February.
The VGSA offers fastpitch softball for girls ages 5-14. Players ages 5-6 play T-ball.
The registration will be held at the VGSA Clubhouse, 800 NE 117th St. The times are 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 1, 4-8 p.m. on Feb. 12 and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Feb. 15.
