MONTREAL (AP) — Montreal Alouettes quarterback Anthony Calvillo is retiring after 20 seasons in the CFL.
The 41-year-old player announced his decision Tuesday at a news conference in which he fought back tears and also spoke in French in recalling an “amazing journey of 20 years.”
Calvillo played his last 16 seasons with Montreal and leaves as the league’s career leader in yards passing and touchdown passes. Calvillo won three Grey Cups and played in eight championship games. The five-time All-Star was honored as the league’s outstanding player three times.
He led Montreal to Grey Cup victories in 2002, 2009 and 2010. After his last championship, Calvillo said he would need surgery to remove a thyroid lesion.
Calvillo appeared in just seven games last year after a season-ending concussion on Aug. 17.
