Tim Martinez: Of leagues that weren’t and future football games

Tim Martinez: High School Sports

Here’s some news and notes that you may, or may not, have seen from the past week.

3A/2A super league

So the combined 3A/2A uber-league that was proposed a couple of weeks never really gained any traction.

The 15-team league was supposed to be comprised of the four 3A GSHL schools, seven 2A GSHL schools and four 2A Evergreen Conference schools split into three divisions sort of along geographic lines.

I decided not to expend the effort to figure out how this league would work, and just let the athletic directors figure it out.

It was a good call, because, luckily, the ADs never got that far.

So next year, the 3A GSHL will be a four-team league comprised of Columbia River, Kelso, Fort Vancouver and Prairie. For football, the 3A GSHL has an arrangement to play non-league games with the 2A EvCo (comprised of Tumwater, Black Hills, Centralia and W.F. West).

But with teams playing only a three-game league schedule, get ready for Kansas Plan tiebreakers.

Non-league football

Speaking of football schedules, some 4A GSHL teams are starting to fill out theirs.

Camas agreed to a home-and-home series with Chiawana of Pasco that will bring the Riverhawks to Camas in Week 1 next September.

It’s hard to call this a rematch of last month’s 4A state title game as the Papermakers will return only one starter next fall.

Skyview will open at Walla Walla in the front end of another home-and-home series.

Battle Ground has set up non-league games against Kent-Meridian and Spanaway Lake.

Lights of La Center

You may have read about this one in our Clark County section, but La Center High School will install lights on its on-campus field, allowing for the Wildcat football team to play game on campus for the first time since the current campus was opened in 1992. La Center has been playing its games over at the nearby middle school.

Fencing around the field and portable bleachers have already been acquired for the field. Future improvements call for a permanent covered grandstand and all-weather turf and track.

Highlights this week

Here are some events to go watch this week.

TUESDAY: The Union boys look to finish the first half of the 4A GSHL basketball season 5-0 when the Titans host Evergreen (4-1). Columbia River will try to do the same in the 3A GSHL with Chieftains travel to play Fort Vancouver.

WEDNESDAY: La Center plays at Kalama in a game for first place in the 1A Trico boys basketball.

FRIDAY: In the wild and crazy world of 2A GSHL boys basketball, Ridgefield plays at Hockinson. Also, the girls bowling regular season concludes.
