NAGANO, Japan (AP) — Shani Davis and Heather Richardson of the United States won their 1,000-meter races at the world sprint speedskating championships on Sunday.
Davis clocked a time of 1 minute, 08.96 seconds to edge Denis Kuzin of Kazakhstan by 0.58 seconds. Michel Mulder of the Netherlands was third in 1:09.96.
Richardson posted a time of 1:15.28 to win the women’s 1,000, beating China’s Hong Zhang by 0.16 seconds. Margot Boer of the Netherlands took third place with a time of 1:16.12.
The world sprint speed skating championships features 50 of the fastest sprinters in the world competing in 500 and 1,000 meter races.
Mulder won the men’s 500 race in a time of 35.12, 0.05 seconds ahead of Daniel Greig of Australia. Keiichiro Nagashima of Japan finished third in 35.28.
