SAN MARCOS, Texas (AP) — Reger Dowell came off the bench to score 16 points and grab five rebounds as Texas-Arlington held on to beat Texas State 56-48 on Saturday.
Lonnie McClanahan had 12 points for the Mavericks (7-10, 2-3 Sun Belt) and Jamel Outler scored 11.
The Mavericks went 10-2 to start but the Bobcats struggled back to take a 24-22 lead on a Phil Hawkins 3-pointer with 1:11 left in the first period.
The Mavericks outscored Texas State 16-8 early in the second to go up 38-32 with 11:37 left to play. The Bobcats came within two on a Wesley Davis layup with 4:23 to play before Dowell helped put it away for the Mavericks by going 4-of-4 from the free throw line in the final 40 seconds.
Gordon Ball led the Bobcats (5-13, 1-4) — who have now lost five of their last six games — with 10 points and seven rebounds.
